The Los Cabos Open Tournament Director Jose Antonio Fernandez commented on the Laver Cup, founded by Roger” federer> and his agent, being introduced on the ATP Tour. Asked how he would feel if Los Cabos coincided with Laver Cup, Fernandez replied: “It would be very tough and I would be very angry because they would take top players.
Laver Cup is a very good tournament and it has some good players from Europe and the rest of the world, so we would be affected by the players’ field.” Fabio Fognini and Diego Schwartzman, who played this year’s Los Cabos, are also committed to the Laver Cup.
Asked which players he would love to see in Los Cabos for the first time, Fernandez replied: “There are several ones but I think it’s complicated because we are in the same week as Kitzbuhel that brings Dominic Thiem and Washington that has Stefanos Tsitsipas and Karen Khachanov.
So I would love to bring those players. Next year we are in the same week as the Tokyo Olympic Games so it will be tough. I will start negotiations right forward. In 2016, during Rio Olympics, we had an unbelievable player’s field but we were the only ATP event there.
In 2020 we coincide with two ATP tournaments like Gstaad and Umag and it will be more difficult. We will start negotiations for 2020 in two weeks at the US Open.” Asked if the big buzz around Citi Open with Nick Kyrgios delivering a show influenced Los Cabos, Fernandez replied: “Washington had a tremendous event but we had too.
Just ask all the players and fans who came here. We opened the new five-star hotel, an unbelievable one, the best one on Tour. Players and press were impressed. We are one of the best tournaments in the world. We will be even better than Acapulco at some point in the future.
I am not the only one saying it, ATP was here and they saw all the facilities. There are so many activities here – golf, fishing – and it’s close to Canada and the United States.”
