Rising Canadian star Denis” shapovalov> will be playing the week before the US Open as he has accepted a wildcard into Winston-Salem, the tournament announced. Shapovalov, ranked at No. 32 in the world, is set for a debut appearance on the hard courts of Winston-Salem.
Winston-Salem Tournament Director Bill Oakes has suggested that he would love to see the 20-year-old Canadian claim his maiden ATP title in North Carolina. “Many think it’s time for 20-year-old phenom Denis Shapovalov to secure his first career ATP World Tour singles title,” Oakes said, per the tournament’s website.
“I think that’s a storyline worth watching at this year’s Winston-Salem Open, as the rising Canadian looks for his first career title.” Shapovalov, a former world No. 20, made the US Open round-of-16 in his debut appearance before making the third round last year.
“Denis is really excited about coming to Winston-Salem to help in his training for the US Open. He is looking for more matches and knows we have the perfect setup for his preparation—from our courts and balls that are the same as Flushing Meadows to the ease of getting around from our host hotel to the Wake Forest Tennis Complex,” Oakes added.
