Simona Halep retired against Marie Bouzkova after losing the first set 6-4. In a press conference the Romanian admitted she is dealing with Achilles problems. “I felt since the first match here. And today I felt it more, so that’s why I decided to retire”, explained Halep in a press conference.
Asked if she would have loved to play a potential final against the Canadian hero Bianca Andreescu, Halep replied: “Tomorrow it would have been Serena” williams> and is not easy. Serena has been my role model growing up.
So, you know, the way I play, you know, my technique, you know, is little bit — you know, the backhand is little bit similar to hers. So, yeah, I mean, I’m just going to try to enjoy as much as I can tomorrow and put up a fight.”
Williams spoke to the reporters when Halep had not retired yet. Asked how it would have been to face Halep, Serena said: “It would be great. Yeah, I couldn’t play — well, yeah. It would be great. I’ll leave it at that.”
Osaka said: “I served well. Just like trying to be solid, I guess. For me, honestly, anything is positive compared to Wimbledon. And I just try to grow on every match. And even though I lost today, I learned a lot, which is something that I’m really grateful for and something that I really looked towards when I play matches anyway.
So there’s, like, a lot of big positives. And I sliced a couple that actually went in (smiling), so that’s also something good.”
