Rising Russian star Karen Khachanov insisted six-time ATP champion Nick Kyrgios has the talent but mentally he is not where he should be after coming from a set down to beat the Australian in the Cincinnati” masters> second round.
Khachanov, seeded at No. 8, failed to serve out for the first set in the ninth game and eventually lost the opener but showed great mental strength and fighting spirit as he ended up winning the match 6-7 (3) 7-6 (4) 6-2.
“He has a really great talent but sometimes the head not in the right place… anyway it was a really difficult match for me–I had to really work it out, how to get the win” Khachanov said post-match, as revealed by Chris Oddo on Twitter.
Unfortunately for Khachanov, his win was overshadowed by Kyrgios on-court antics and outbursts as many expect the Australian to receive a big fine from the ATP — maybe even the biggest fine ever. “It’s really tough, I think not only for me but for everybody.
That’s the only way you can try to handle it, and you can have chances to win the match. Always try to stay there,” Khachanov said of the challenges of dealing with the Kyrgios chaos.
