Gael” monfils> feels confident ahead of the US Open. The Frenchman has not recovered well enough yet after his intense week in Montreal where he withdrew from the semifinals match against Rafael Nadal and in Cincinnati he lost to Frances Tiafoe on Wednesday.
Monfils said: “I took some painkillers to help myself. It will be nice to take a rest for some days and have time to continue my physical preparation ahead of the US Open. I will work to strenghten my ankle, knee… I will be able to do big sessions to push more.
I hope to stay here as long as possible with Elina Svitolina. If she continues in the tournament, I will start training here and then we will go to New York. I want to play well, find a good rhythm, reach the second week and even a bit more if it’s possible.”
Tiafoe explained why he had a chat with Monfils during the match: “He was just trying to pull a move. I mean, let’s get real here (smiling). He was trying to slow me down, obviously. He’s got a break. I’m up a set and break, 4-2 serving, 30-15 have a chance to go for 5-2.
He was trying to slow me down. I get it, you know. Usually that stuff works but it didn’t work today (smiling).”
